Day 48 July 24 Canarvon Gorge-Moree 684km

We left Canarvon Gorge early in the morning for the big drive to Moree. As we approached Moree Greta wanted to stop to take a picture of the beautiful sunset. As Greta was taking the photo, the boys noticed a dead kangaroo on the road in front of our car on the side of the road (unfortunately a common sight...luckily we did not hit it). The boys thought it was moving, but I said it was definitely dead. Then something in the pouch moved and it was a little baby kangaroo...a joey. Greta rescued it from the pouch and we took it home to her sister Lizzy in Moree. We will hand it over to a friend of Lizzy's who cares for wildlife, but for two days we got to play parents to a little joey. We think it is a girl....have a look at the photos...she is so cute.

Jules feeds the joey. Just like a baby, the little joey needs a bottle feed about every 4-5 hours. We are not too sure how old this one is, but possible around 6 months old. It would have certainly been still spending most of it's time in the pouch.

Greta feeds "Lucky" That is what we called her. We made a pouch out of a cotton shopping bag and lined it with a towel and hot water bottle. Between feeds lucky hung in her "pouch" off the door knob!

We let her out on the grass to make sure she wasn't hurt of that she did not have any broken bones. All seems OK, but very wobbly. This joey would certainly be still spending most of her time in the pouch.

We made a short video.
